It took the name of an ancient priory ; the district of Saint-Jean is located not far from the old town on the right bank of the Rhône river. That residential neighbourhood dominates the river and Jonction from the top of its cliffs.

On a plateau that overhang the Rhône, the neighbourhood of Saint-Jean offers a favourable situation. To the west of the city centre alongside the right bank of the Rhône river, that area gives an easy access to the Jonction-Plainpalais and to the neighbourhood of Servette and Petit-Saconnex, Saint-Gervais and Grottes. Thanks to the public transportation, it is easy to move around town.
Alongside the Saint-Jean street, principal artery of the neighbourhood, houses, mansions and buildings follow each others. Shops are also presents, as well as on Beulet street. Markets gather the inhabitants few times per week. The environment gives the feeling to be in a neighbourhood as a village inside the city.
